Harvesting from my home garden today
Have you ever seen or eaten Malabar Spinach (Scientific name: Basella Alba), grown in hot and humid climate and eaten as stir fried or in soup (Well, depends on where you have seen it!)?
It is the most popular leafy vegetable (Shak/শাক) in Bangladesh and oh my, I don’t know when did I eat that last time! I was missing it so much and I did not have any place to grow it before. Luckily I had some seeds with me, brought like 6 years ago and all these time I carried with me in a hope that someday I can grow them in my garden, harvest and eat them with my favorite recipe…

I have grown them for quite a while..like 6 months! It’s just because the weather in Denmark is so cold that it does even help if you put the plant inside. I am still happy that it grew well inside and tried to tough my ceiling!

Today’s harvesting is enough for 2 servings and some extra for re-potting. I have saved a few stems to replant – I put them some directly in soil and some I kept in water to see if any roots come out.

However it is important which branches are you re-potting. As you can see in the picture, stem with a side branch is the best, as they tend to grow faster!

Well, if you wanna know the delicious, traditional Bangladeshi vegan recipe of Malabar spinach, then check my Vegan Bangla blog site. I have explained step by step cooking methods there.
