Spicy Puffed Rice- Jhal Muri (ঝাল মুড়ি)

Well, it is raining again in Copenhagen…long gloomy days, with chilled wind, nothing will make this kind of days better unless you have jhal muri with dudh cha! You may wonder what is jhal muri and what is dudh cha? Jhal means spicy and muri is puffed rice- so literally jhal muri means spicy puffed rice, which pairs perfectly well with milk tea (dudh cha) in rainy days!

This easy to make, crowd pleasing comfort snacks is one of the most common snacks in Bangladesh. Actually muri is one of the staple snacks in rural areas of Bangladesh. It is made from rice grains that puffed in very hot sand and turned into beautiful,white and crispy. Muri can be eaten as it is but there’s many vegan snacks can be made with muri. But today we are going to make the most simplest one, Jhal muri. If you have Bangladeshi chanachur than even better, but if not, simple onion, salt green chili and mustard oil will also do.

So first we slice the onion and chili very thin. Then we take it in bowl and add mustard oil and salt. We need to mix this with hand well, until the onion are loose.

Then we add Bangladeshi chanachur (fried pulse crisps) and mix it well with onions and oil.

For the last step, we add muri and give everything a very good mix with big spoon so all muri are coated with mustard oil and flavors of onion and chanachur. Now remember, muri gets easily soft if they left open. So it is to be consumed quickly after making.

Recipe: Jhal Muri, 2person
Ingredients:
Muri -2 cups
Chanachur – 1cup
Onion- 1 small
Chili – 2
Salt- 1/4 tsp
Mustard oil – 1tsp
1. Slice onion and chili very thin. Take them in a bowl and add salt and mustard oil. Mash everything with hand until onions are loosen and slightly soften.
2. Add chanachur to onion mixture and give it a good mix again with hand.
3. Now add Muri and give it a good stir with spoon so they are well coated in all flavor and oil.
