Food and Culture

The national food of Bangladesh is rice and fish, where the national fish of Bangladesh is Illish (Hilsa in English).

The national fruit of Bangladesh is Jackfruit, which looks almost like famous Durian but way bigger. Jackfruit is mostly eaten as a ripe fruit but it is often eaten as a vegetable when harvested unripe. Nowadays, green jackfruit are a popular vegan option in the world, but in Bangladesh, green/unripe jackfruit are eaten as a curry for centuries. That’s why green jackfruit is called “Gach Patha” (Plant Goat)!

Bangladesh has both vegan, vegetarian and non-vegetarian street food options. Among vegan street food, fuchka, daal puri, alu puri, bhapa pitha, chitoi pitha are the most popular.
